Career summit works to teach young adults work skills
A program designed to help young adults gain skills to prepare for their future recently invited high school students and recent graduates to a summit.

ELKINS — A program designed to help young adults gain skills to prepare for their future recently invited high school students and recent graduates to a summit.
Donna Cain, senior counselor for the Division of Rehabilitation Services, said counselors try to help students find employment in an area they are interested in while they take part in the summit.
“We try to do our best to take a journey with them — from discovering their interests by doing interest inventories, finding what their skill set is and looking for employment in that area,” she said.
Focus topics incorporated into the workshops included self-assessment, career planning, resume development, interviewing skills, work ethic and employer expectations.
“The main goal is to give them an experience and understanding for work,” Cain said.
Wayne Hartman, branch office supervisor for the Elkins office, said counselors incorporated fun ways to gain skills and practice through involved games and even presentations for West Virginia Workforce and area businesses.
Cain noted the Division of Rehabilitation offers services to people who need assistance applying for jobs or creating a resume.
