Ford to Retool Existing Ontario Assembly Complex for EV Production

Ford Motor Co. reported plans to invest US$1.3 billion to transform its Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario into a high-volume Canadian hub for next-generation EV manufacturing. The company will repurpose existing buildings on the current 487-acre site and feature a new 407,000 square-foot battery plant that will use cells and arrays from the Kentucky BlueOvalSK Battery Park.

The campus will be renamed Oakville Electric Vehicle Complex and include vehicle and battery pack assembly for the North American market.

“The successful transition to EV production in Oakville will help deliver stable Canadian employment with the opportunity to build the new skills and expertise to drive Ford and the industry forward,” said Bev Goodman, president and CEO, Ford of Canada.

The transformation will begin in the second quarter of 2024, and EV production is set to start in 2025.

“Canada and the Oakville complex will play a vital role in our Ford+ transformation,” said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO. “It will be a modern, super-efficient, vertically integrated site for battery and vehicle assembly. I’m most excited for the world to see the incredible next-generation electric and fully digitally connected vehicles produced in Oakville.”
